Professor Amaya received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing from UTEP in 1976. She earned a Masters degree in Maternal-Child Nursing from Texas Woman's University in 1978, and a PhD in Educational Administration from New Mexico State University in 1986. She first joined the UTEP Nursing faculty in January 1979. She is a board-certified Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner, trained in 1993-94 at UT Southwestern Medical School. She has taught extensively in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the UTEP College of Nursing. She also serves as interim Director of Nursing Research.
