Josiah McC, Heyman was born in Oklahoma City, OK and grew up there, Blacksburg, VA, and Pittsburgh, PA. He received a BA from The Johns Hopkins University in 1980 and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York, where he studied with Eric Wolf. He has dedicated his scholarly and personal career to the people of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. He is married to Merlyn Heyman, and has one son, Robert Heyman.
