Dr. Edward “Ed” Ramirez (Ph.D. in Business Administration, Florida State University, in 2010; MBA in general management Cal State University 2003; MS in International Affairs from Florida State University in 1998; BA in Liberal Arts with a Psychology major from the University of Tennessee in 1993) worked for 41 years across two demanding careers. With his first career spanning 23 years, Ed served in front-line customer contact and customer service roles (Burger King in Miami Springs, FL in 1984 and Arby’s in Knoxville, TN in the late ‘80s), through both front and back of the house roles in the casual dining sector (O’Charley’s), to restaurant manager level roles in Tennessee and North Carolina, to mid-level manager roles (where he oversaw restaurants across three regions for Chick-fil-A Inc.), and finally to senior-level management positions for two start-up companies (where he selected franchisees, developed operational materials, taught food cost and food safety courses, as well as developed franchise agreements and uniform offering circulars for Moe’s Southwest Grill and Famous Yardbird in Atlanta, GA). Ed’s second career, which spanned 18 years, was as an academic, where he published and coauthored 25 peer-reviewed research papers, presented or coauthored 31 presentations at academic conferences across the country and around the globe, served on several review boards for recognized journals, graduated and placed four doctoral students (sorry for not staying, Amit!), and has had his research cited 3,983 times (raking him 69 out of 1,303 faculty at UTEP). Ed's research spans topics such as sustainable marketing strategy, services marketing, and philosophy of science. His research has been published by Financial Times Top 50 journals, such as the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. In addition, he has published and coauthored research published in the well-recognized Journal of Business Research, Journal of Service Research, Industrial Marketing Management, Psychology and Marketing, and others. Ed’s recent research interests involve retail theft/crime (such as the murder of Nick Megrath at Chick-fil-A) and corporate level extortion (from organizations and NGOs such as the UN, the Club of Rome, and BLM). Ed’s teaching abilities have also been recognized as he has won the teaching award for Marketing at both the undergraduate and the MBA level four times at UTEP, along with being nominated on a regular basis. In his spare time, Ed enjoys guitar (playing approximately 400 songs, as long as he can read the chords, on his 13 guitars!), traveling extensively (as he has traveled across the US and Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, and SE Asia), snorkeling (the Caribbean, Philippines, Thailand, etc.), reading (on UFOs, classical literature, philosophy, and controversial/conspiracy theory related content), and cooking (including smoking prime rib, grilling steaks to perfection, and whatever else he has learned working in restaurants). Ed can be reached at eramirez29@utep.edu.
