Dr. Donald A. Michie is a professor of Marketing. He has his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with specialization in real estate and urban geography. Dr. Michie came to UTEP to teach in 1981. He has served previously as chairman of the Marketing Department and director of the Institute of Manufacturing and Materials Management (IM3). In these capacities, he focused his offices as a resource to facilitate the industrial development and quality of life of the Paso del Norte community. Through his efforts, IM3's Borderbase, a database for border trade and development, was initiated. Dr. Michie has been instrumental in furthering the cause for border development.. He spearheaded the border's strategic plan for NAFTA. He prepared the border's $362 million program to secure federal funding for capital improvements among southwest border ports of entry. He drafted bill language that became federal and state law regulating Mexican commercial motor carriers. Recently, he coordinated a $200 million dollar legislative initiative to fund infrastructure projects for the Southwest border. He is a member of the U.S. Federal Agency Strategic Planning Committee for Border Infrastructure and a member of the El Paso Bridge Commission. He is a board member of the El Paso Foreign Trade Association and the Border Trade Alliance and has chaired several of their committees. He served previously as an advisor to the Secretary, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S.-Mexico Borders Governors. He frequently testifies on U.S.-Mexico trade and border development issues.
