Dr. Maldonado attended the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Biology major. Upon graduation from Biology in 1989, she developed research in chemotherapy of Schistosoma mansoni and Trypanosoma cruzi at the UCV, in several projects supported by the Venezuelan Council of Development Scientific and humanistic (CDCH) and World Health Organization (WHO).<br>In 1992 she entered the PhD program of the Biophysics Institute Carlos Chagas Filho at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During her PhD, she developed part of her experimental work at the Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, ILL. After receiving her Ph.D. degree in 1996, Dr Maldonado obtained a Welcome Trust International Fellowship from UK. From 1999 to 2002, Dr. Maldonado continued her work at the University of São Paulo (USP), and then in Jan 2004 she joined the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) as a visiting professor at the Gene Therapy Center.<br>In October 2004, Dr. Maldonado joined the Dept. of Biological Sciences, University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), as assistant professor (tenure track).<br>In September 2010 Dr. Maldonado was awarded a Tenure position and was promoted to Associate Professor.<br>In September 1, 2021 Dr. Maldonado was promoted to Professor.
