• Three indicators were employed including Enrichment factor (EF), potential ecological risk assessment (PERI), and geoaccumulation (I geo) to measure degree the of contamination As, Co, and Hg in soils. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the concentration of As, Co, and Hg in the soils of Iowa (IA, Kansas (KS), and Nebraska (NE). In addition, establish the contamination level of these metals using the three methods. Additionally, study the spatial distribution of chemical elements to establish the potential source of the elements and which preferable evaluation tools could be perfectly applied to verify the quality and the health of the soil. It is considered that human activities such as agricultural applications can cause increasing of chemical elements in the soil and these high significant concentrations of biological active substances affect the quality and functioning of the soil microbial biogenesis, soil fertility, and human health. As and Co were measured as minimal enrichment and low risk using EF and PERI indexes. Hg presented the highest concentration in the study area with respect to As and Co, with maximum value 1.10 in IA, 1.39 in KS, and 1.12 in NE. for EF of As are classified in IA (1.01), KS (0.90), and NE (1). Totally, EF of the three elements can be ordered Hg = 0.66 > As= 0.42 > Co= 0.25 in three states. However, EF of As is measured minimal contaminated in IA and NE while Co indicated minimal contaminated in NE, however, EF of Hg classified as minimal contaminated in all the states. According to the evaluating standard of PERI, As and Co are classified as a low risk in IA (10.50), in KS (9.78), in NE (10.37), and the same contamination level is estimated for Co as low risk with values in IA (5.22), KS (4.39), and NE (5.34). in contract, PERI values of Hg are higher than As and Co with values in IA (49.49), KS (53.72), and NE (49.51). As and Co indicated uncontaminated to moderately contaminated (I geo = 0-1) in the soil. I geo of Hg is highest of three chemical elements, Hg > As > Co. The highest value of I geo is observed in Ks (1.38) followed NE (1.12) and IA (1.10). However, I geo degree of As is approximately similar in IA (1.01) and KS (0.90) and NE (1), which indicated as uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, while I geo degree of Co is lowest and its average in IA (0.98), KS (0.88, NE (1.03) under the classification of uncontaminated to moderately contaminated. These investigations indicate to the possibility of the soil contamination with the As originated from human inputs. In addition, minimal to moderate contamination value of As and Co in IA, KS and NE in the soil is sourced from human applications as well. PERI showed serious ecological risk pollution of Hg in the soils of IA, KS, and NE. The results of enrichment of chemical elements indicated that these elements are originally come from anthropogenic sources, which is presents a toxic risk for virtual ecosystem of midcontinent of USA that requires an essential monitoring.
